Acts 2:42-47
Acts 2:42-47
After becoming Christians, the former killers of Christ clung to the apostles and to each other for the purpose of growing in their new-found faith. The text keeps emphasizing the unity that existed amongst the believers. They were together when the apostles taught them. They were together when they worshiped God. They were together when they ate meals in each other’s houses. They were together when they attended the Jewish temple together. Most importantly, they were united in praising God for their salvation.
The glory of God is arguably the main point of the entire Bible. It is certainly the main point of the book of Acts and the main point of this small section of text. Throughout the stories, we see the constant failure on the part of God’s enemies to crush the early church (despite repeated cases of violent persecution), and the constant success of early disciples to spread God’s word and magnify his name. In this passage, not only were the Christians “praising God,” they were also “having favor with all the people.” In other words, they were glorifying God themselves, but they were also causing God’s name to be magnified through the good impression they made on the Jews who had not obeyed Christ.
When Christians are united in their praise and adoration of God, it not only fosters a love and affection within the family of God, it also causes others outside of it to be interested in joining! The Lord richly blesses such unified situations. Vs. 47 records that God was adding people to his church, brought about by the efforts of his disciples.
