Matthew 24:43-51
Matthew 24:43-51
Jesus finishes the first half of His final major discourse with general warnings of watchfulness. These warnings applied primarily to the coming destruction of Jerusalem but certainly apply to the need to prepare us for the final judgment.
The central message is, no one knows when the judgment will come. Paul repeated this principle in 1 Thessalonians 5 when talking about the second coming of the Lord. When people are saying, “Peace and safety,” then judgment will come. Watching and being ready has to do with always living as if the Lord is coming today. If we start thinking that His coming is some time in the future, we will procrastinate and not make the corrections necessary to keep us right with the Lord. When we start thinking about what we would like to get out of this life, the Lord will certainly come when we do not expect it. At any rate, even if the Lord did not come, we must consider that death could come at any time and when death comes, judgment comes next (Heb. 9:27).
It is of interest to note that Jehovah’s Witnesses argue that the “faithful and wise servant” in this text refers to the Watchtower Society. In the Jehovah’s Witness religion, Watchtower governs the belief system of all their churches. They boast uniform belief, but that is only because they unquestionably follow everything Watchtower produces, even when it is in direct contradiction to the scriptures. In fact, Watchtower has not only changed their position on various passages over the years, but they have also repeatedly made specific predictions of the coming of Christ and the beginning of the millennium and been wrong. Their latest prediction, made in 1967, stated that the millennium would begin in fall of 1975. Of course, that did not happen. Therefore, if Watchtower is to be seen in this text, they are not exactly “faithful and wise” nor are they “giving meat in due season.” In fact, they are teaching false doctrine, insisting that their doctrine is from God and insisting that their followers obey and teach it. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 tells us that anyone who does what they have done is to be disregarded as a teacher from the Lord.
