Matthew 5:6
Matthew 5:6
We live in an “unsatisfied” world. Ask yourself the question: Are you satisfied? Honestly, most of us would answer that we wouldn’t mind if there were some things that were different. We would be a little more “satisfied” if we had this or that or certain things in our life would change for the better. In fact, if we thought about it long enough we could come up with a whole list of things we would like to see change to help us reach that truly satisfied state.Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes talked about how all men “seek and search all that is done under heaven” in order to find out what profit a man could have from all his labor (Ecc. 1:13). But he concluded that it was a “grievous task.” Solomon even searched every imaginable area of life to find that illusive satisfied state. He said, “Whatever my heart desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure.” But after all his searching, what was his conclusion? “Indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun” (Ecc. 2:11).
Jesus gives the answer. Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, will be satisfied/filled. You see, there is no such thing as being filled and satisfied with the things of this world. That is Satan’s illusion. It is like offering salt water to a man dying of thirst. It may seem to satisfy for a moment, but the result is a quicker death. Our hunger and thirst is misdirected. If we hunger for right living, seeking the knowledge of God in order to live like Him, we will be filled.
Please note that the words Jesus used for hunger and thirst are the strongest that could be used in the Greek. This is not referring to getting hungry between meals or thirsty after being without water for a few hours. This refers to a starving man on the verge of death who is grasping for food and drink. There will be no satisfaction for the person who casually seeks righteousness. Only the person who has a passion for it like a starving man for food, will truly be satisfied.
