Matthew 5:7
Have you ever been in a position of needing mercy? Mercy is having someone else come to your rescue when it is impossible to help yourself. We Americans think of ourselves a self-sufficient. We do not need anyone; we can take care of ourselves. Some would proudly say that they have never needed mercy and do not ever plan on needing it. Actually, those are the words of a fool. Every person will need mercy, not only on the Day of Judgment, but in this life as well.Who will show you mercy? The ones to whom you have been merciful. In fact, the Lord presents both an earthly and heavenly rule. Merciful people will receive mercy. The opposite is also true. The one who has a character that disregards the condition of human suffering will one day cry out for help, but there will be no one to answer. Mercy is extended to the merciful.

Mercy is not simply an emotional wave of pity. It is first the ability to get inside the other person and see things with his eyes. Going further than this, it is the ability to see oneself in the same condition. It is knowing that I too could fall prey to such a disaster. Jesus said that the reason the good Samaritan helped the man who had been beaten by thieves was because “he had compassion.” The priest and Levite passed on the other side because they did not think such a thing could ever happen to them. They believed that their “righteousness” would protect them. Until I can see my own vulnerability, I will not act on behalf of others. Thus, mercy is coming to the aid of the sufferer.

The greatest act of mercy is often the one most overlooked. Your friend or neighbor is without the gospel. They have the deadly disease of sin that will condemn them eternally if they do not have the remedy of Jesus Christ. Will you just think it is their problem? Will you quietly believe that if they were as wise as you they would find the truth? Or, will you have mercy on them? How you answer the question may determine whether you also will receive mercy.
